No Seat At The Table – Sold out

No Seat At The Table is a fictional graphic novel about the local and global influences of gentrification on citizens in Turkish and Dutch cities. The book highlights four neighbourhoods where this phenomenon is occurring: Piyalepaşa in Istanbul, İsmetpaşa in Ankara, De Kolenkitbuurt in Amsterdam, and Lombok in Utrecht.

Initiator Minem Sezgin, together with illustrators Jasmijn de Nood and Bob Mollema, book designer Vincent de Boer and publisher Eleonoor (Jap Sam) will tell you all about how and why this novel was developed. The event is part of our new urban design research at RAUM that will start this year on the topic of housing inequality.

What defines a city? Is it its buildings, public spaces or people? No Seat At The Table is a fictional graphic novel about the local and global influences of gentrification on citizens in Turkish and Dutch cities. Initiator Minem Sezgin, together with illustrators Jasmijn de Nood en Bob Mollema, book designer Vincent de Boer and publisher Eleonoor (Jap Sam), will tell you all about how and why this novel was developed.

The book highlights four neighbourhoods where this phenomenon is occurring: Piyalepaşa in Istanbul, İsmetpaşa in Ankara, De Kolenkitbuurt in Amsterdam, and Lombok in Utrecht. Each story is told from the perspective of pigeons and inspired by real life experiences of residential displacement in Turkey and the Netherlands. The stories critically investigate gentrification, the housing crisis and the current interpretations of setting priorities and affordability in urban planning. By doing so, it aims to facilitate the conversation on inclusive and sustainable cities for all.

Finissage

The book launch is the finissage of two years of creative work. The process includes extensive research, creating the graphic novel, two team residencies (one at RAUM for story development and the other at Kapitaal Utrecht for a limited edition of handmade screen printed illustration prints), and development of an online platform. During the event Minem Sezgin will talk about why and how the project was initiated and developed into what it has become. Illustrators Jasmijn de Nood and Bob Mollema will briefly share their experience in visualising the story. The team members will also have a moment of conversation with the attendees to answer questions and show the book and screen printed illustration prints in person.

The team behind No Seat At The Table consists of Minem Sezgin,  the founder, curator and scriptwriter; the illustrators Jasmijn de Nood (Amsterdam), Rajab Eryigit (Istanbul), Erhan Muratoglu (Ankara), Bob Mollema (Utrecht); and book designer Vincent de Boer. This team also developed an online platform, The Table, which is created to exchange personal stories and information about gentrification, the housing crisis and to stimulate the information flow on the individual and collective housing rights. The online platform The Table is designed and developed by Martijn van de Zuidwind and Rik Frieling.

The project is financially supported by Creative Industries Fund NL, Stichting Stokroos, Corendon Foundation, RAUM, NIT Istanbul.
